The start of the 50th Barcolana Autumn Cup Regatta, which as today is the most crowded in the world, is held in the Gulf of Triest, Italy, in the northern Adriatic Sea every second Sunday of October.
In 2018 Barcolana set the Guinness World Record: 2689 boats participated that year and the Barcolana of Trieste was officially proclaimed the largest Ssailing race in the world.
When the Barcolana was founded in 1969 the participating boats were 51. Expert sailors and ordinary sailing lovers are able to race side by side in the same regatta. A unique event where everybody is a "winner" since for the majority of the participants the fun and excitement of taking part at this event is more important than cutting the finish line.
This year Spirit of Portopiccolo won the 13 mile race in only 57.04 minutes, followed by Ottica Inn, and Way of Life.
