The Nieuwe Kerk in the city of Delft, in the Dutch province of South Holland, is a church building on the Markt in the centre of the city. At 108.75 metres, the tower is the second highest church tower in the Netherlands after the Dom tower in Utrecht. The church is also known for the mausoleum of William of Orange. Under the tomb is the tomb of Orange-Nassau, the burial chamber of the Royal Household.
Balthasar Friedrich Leizelt (also spelled Leizel, active between 1750-1800) was a German artist and copper engraver based in Augsburg.
Leizelt produced a series of European and American landscape views at a time when photographs of foreign lands and people were popular and designed for use in optical viewers. As is usual with these prints, the series title is a mirror image because optical viewers used mirrors that inverted the image. The Age of Enlightenment sparked a great interest in science, so optical toys and devices became a standard form of salon entertainment in the 18th and 19th centuries. Light, perspective and multiple images were cleverly combined to create the illusion of moving pictures.
