This ancient map from around 1900 shows the so-called Balkan Peninsula. The Balkans forms the easternmost peninsula of the three major peninsulas in southern Europe. The formal name for the region is south-eastern Europe. It is bounded to the north by the Sava and Danube rivers and to the northwest by the Trieste-Ljubljana line. The Balkans includes these countries:
Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, northern Macedonia, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria.
Even part of Turkey, Slovenia, Moldova, Romania and Greece are included in the Balkans.
Of all the countries in the Balkan region, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina, among others, belonged to the former Yugoslavia.
