It is also known as the BMW 02 series (1966-1977), which was positioned below the New Class and from which the BMW 1600 was developed. Although it was approx. 30 cm shorter than the New Class, as the wheelbase remained almost the same, the 02 hardly looked any smaller inside. Typical and also immediately recognisable is that it was only available as a two-door model, hence the later designations with 02 at the end, for example 1502, 1602, 1802 etc.
In addition, the BMW 02 series (Type 114, E6, E10, E20) established BMW's image of fast and sporty cars and this still applies today. And the designation ti with 120 hp or tii with 130 hp was still in the minds of many a novice driver or teenager as a childhood dream, and I was one of them.
What hardly anyone knows today is that Bayrische Flugzeugwerke was founded on 7 March 1916, which was renamed Bayrische Motorwerke just one year later. And to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 1966, the new BMW 1600 was presented in Milbertshofen (a district of Munich where production still takes place today) with glamour and splendour.
Total production of the BMW 02 totalled more than 863,000 vehicles.
Until July 1973 there were round rear lights and a chrome front grille, then square rear lights and a plastic front grille.
