Autumn in the forest. I made this recording in the Vijlenerbos, South Limburg, the Netherlands. The beautiful autumn colours, the trees and the foliage on the ground made for a nice atmospheric autumn photo.
The Vijlenerbos is a 650 ha forest and nature reserve near the town of Vijlen in the Dutch-Limburg municipality of Vaals. At the southern edge of the forest are small parts of the Belgian municipality Blieberg. The Vijlenerbos actually consists of several forests, which are all owned by the Staatsbosbeheer (State Forestry Commission); this is why they are sometimes referred to as the Vijlenerbossen.
The Vijlenerbos is an elongated forest area that stretches over a length of approx. 8 km between Epen and the Drielandenpunt near Vaals. The forest borders on Belgium over a length of approx. 5 km and Germany over a length of approx. 1 km. Subareas of the forest are usually named after villages and hamlets nearby. From west to east: the Elzetterbos (near Elzet and Rott), the actual Vijlenerbos, the Kerperbos, the Holsetterbos (near Holset), the Malensbos (south of the Epenerbaan), the Schimperbos (southwest of Wolfhaag) and the also wooded Vaalserberg. The Vaalserberg connects both on Belgian and German territory to similar slope forests, such as the Aachener Wald and the Preusbos. Together these forests are referred to as the Drielandenbos.
