Assisi (Dutch: Assisië) is a city in the Italian region of Umbria. The city of the 13th-century Saints Francis and Clara of Assisi is a famous pilgrimage place, which is also appreciated by tourists for its hilly, narrow streets and picturesque shops.
Assisi offers an impressive view: the town is built on the slope of a hill that overlooks the valley of Spoleto on the left and Perugia on the right, about 15 kilometres away. It is known for its warm-white colour and silhouette, dominated by the basilica and the castle ('Rocca Maggiore') on the hilltop, at the foot of the green, 1290 m high Monte Subasio.
Josef Eberz (3 June 1880 in Limburg an der Lahn, Hesse, Germany; 27 August 1942 in Munich, Bavaria) was a German painter, graphic artist, illustrator and designer of mosaics and stained glass windows with a strong focus on religious subjects.
From 1901 he studied at the Art Academy of Munich with Franz Stuck and Peter Halm, in 1904 he moved to the Art Academy of Düsseldorf and in the same year to Karlsruhe. In 1905 he went to the art academy of Stuttgart.
Eberz began as an expressionist, influenced by Futurism and Cubism; in his later monumental works there was a strong influence of the Pittura metafisica.
