True love? The Greek philosopher Plato distinguished between two types of love: a heavenly, spiritual form and an earthly, sensual form. Heavenly love was best. Scheffer literally depicts this with heavenly love looking down on earthly love. This work was exhibited in Dordrecht in 1854. It proved a little too daring for some: a lady ran away screaming.
The painting shows a woman, neatly dressed and one nude with hips, torso and breasts in the portrait.
Ary Scheffer (in the Netherlands also Arij) (Dordrecht, Holland, the Netherlands 10 February 1795 - Argenteuil, Val-d'Oise near Paris, France 15 June 1858) was a Dutch-French painter of the Romantic school.
