About the artwork

Mary Magdalene or of Magdala belonged according to the New Testament to the group of women (the three Mary's) who were present at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, his burial and his resurrection. In the course of history she was sometimes mistaken for a woman of light morals, a prostitute or a whore.

This nude portrait shows the model naked with her long hair covering her breasts. The girl looks up piously.

In this late work by Bresciani da Gazoldo, the sensuality of the woman portrayed offers a modern interpretation of Mary Magdalene's character. The very long hair that covers her breasts effectively creates the model of the repentant sinner, who uses her ancient instruments of seduction to get closer to a figure that does not appear here, but that we can identify in Jesus Christ. Bresciani's technique is characterized by an almost photographic realism, tending towards an expression that is the painter's true focal point. The long, almost crooked hands seem to be consumed in a subdued and desperate prayer, while Magdalena's face tilts upwards, enraptured by a sudden observance of the word of God. Thus the girl portrayed enters a timeless dimension that still affects us with great effectiveness.

Archimede Bresciani da Gazoldo (Gazoldo degli Ippoliti, Italy, July 27, 1881 - Milan, July 9, 1939) was an Italian painter.
