Sturdy zinc-like with a conical bill, thick head and 'bull's neck'. The apple finch's plumage is predominantly rusty brown, but has many highlights. Notable are the deep blue, curled tips of some of the flight feathers. The beak of the male also turns steel blue as spring approaches. In the beautiful soft sunlight, the bird came to drink for a while, it gave a nice reflection in the water.
