About "Apostelhoeve, Jekerdal Maastricht"

About the artwork

The Apostelhoeve is a vineyard in the south of the Dutch city of Maastricht. The Apostelhoeve is located on the Louwberg on the west side of the Jeker valley, near the Belgian border (Kanne).

As early as the Middle Ages wine grapes were cultivated in the Jeker valley, until the "Little Ice Age" around 1600 this came to an end. In 1970, the fruit grower Hugo Hulst decided to build another vineyard on the Apostelhoeve. The first harvest yielded 1400 bottles of wine. Nowadays an area of more than 10 hectares is used for viticulture. After the peak summer of 2018, winegrower Hulst expected to be able to produce more than 100,000 bottles for the first time.

On the soil, which consists of gravel and marl with a layer of loess, the following grape varieties are grown: riesling, auxerrois, rivaner and pinot gris. They are used exclusively to make white wines, which have a fresh, mineral flavour and are related in style and production to wines from Alsace.
Beneath the farm lies the Apostle's Quarry.
