About "Anton Faistauer, Road towards Dürnstein, 1913"

About the artwork

Faistauer's decision to paint over write was due to his high school friend Albert Paris Gütersloh and the 1903 Impressionist exhibition at the Secession. Faistauer managed to get into the Vienna Academy on his second try, becoming a classmate of Egon Schiele. In protest against the Academy's conservative educational philosophy, Faistauer founded the Neukunstgruppe with Schiele and other dissenters such as Franz Wiegele. Faistauer drew decisive influence from Paul Cézanne's paintings, but managed to go even further than the master's painterly way of working.

This view of Dürnstein, an idyllic town in the Wachau Valley, comes to life through the ochre tones of the central path, walls and buildings in the background, as well as the juicy green and blue accents of the vines. Together with the deep blue sky, the picture is built on a harmony of colours. In doing so, Faistauer succeeded in depicting a dense, atmospheric Austrian landscape along the Danube, even reminiscent of Tuscan landscapes.

Anton Faistauer (Sankt Martin bei Lofer, 14 February 1887 - Clohars-Carnoët, 13 February 1920) was an Austrian painter. He worked mainly in a post-impressionist style.
