Antique statue of the Virgin Mary in prayer

by Henk Egbertzen

A wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, photographed up close. Her hands are clasped, her eyes downcast. The paint is old, flaking off here and there. Behind her is a smooth, bright yellow background.

-
The texture tells the whole story. You can see the grain of the wood, the cracks in the paint, the traces of the years. As if the statue has stood in a church or living room for generations. As if it has absorbed time itself.

-
Her expression is serene. No sorrow, no joy. Only silence. As if she were lost in deep prayer and, for a moment, the world no longer existed. As if she were waiting for an answer.

-
The yellow background is a striking choice. It is not a soft, tranquil church setting, but a bright, modern colour. That contrast between the old, fragile statue and the bright colour makes the image compelling.

-
The style is purely photographic. No filters, no special effects. What you see is what the camera saw. The beauty lies in the material itself: the wood, the paint, the passage of time.

This piece would look good in a hall, an office or a meditation room. For those who love vintage and history. For those who see beauty in things older than ourselves.
