2023 is the year of Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek, the versatile 17th century Delft scientist who, among other things, greatly improved the microscope with his self-ground lenses and he mapped all kinds of micro-organisms.
About the image:
Anthony in his study (as depicted ca. 1680 - 1686 by Jan Verkolje). Miauw edited the whole, adding two of Anthony's now world-famous microscopes and also two windows with Vermeer's View of Delft. Not only were Van Leeuwenhoek and Vermeer both born in Delft, they also lived and worked there at the same time, and were possibly friends or at least acquaintances.
(Fun fact: According to some sources, it might be Anthony who is depicted as the Astronomer in the painting of the same name by Vermeer. It is also possible that Vermeer used lenses during the making of his high-quality paintings, which may have been sharpened by Anthony. )
An ode to two Delft greats, as an eye-catcher on your wall.
