About the artwork

Charlie Troglo

Charlie Troglo was a police officer in Chicago during the turbulent years of Al "Cupcake" Capone. Troglo's bizarre story is as follows: Cupcake Capone seemed like an innocent baker with a bakery on Michigan Avenue. Nothing was further from the truth, however, as Cupcake Capone made delicious cupcakes with lots of rum and a pinch of cocaine, available through special orders. He was Chicago's undisputed cupcake king. For some time, the patrolling street cop Troglo had been puzzled by the fact that the bakery was quite busy, and he decided to keep an eye on things. Cupcake Capone, however, was extremely cautious and very mindful of infiltrations. But Charlie Troglo was no slouch; he was also super smart. Troglo disguised himself as Johnny Torrio, a notorious gangster who had a near monopoly on everything in town. Disguised as Johnny, he ordered the special cupcakes and kept the receipt. Once outside, Charlie Troglo had a piece of evidence in his hands. Later that day, near closing time, Troglo went to the bakery in uniform and arrested Cupcake Capone amid much uproar. Cupcake Capone was taken to court and given four life sentences. Charlie Troglo's story has been chronicled and a wax statue of him is on display at the Chicago Police Department Memorial Foundation.
