An encounter on the savannah road – Wildebeest in South Africa

by Bert Altena

During a safari in the rugged landscape of South Africa, this group of wildebeest suddenly appeared on a narrow sandy track amidst the greenery. For a moment, time seemed to stand still. The animals paused, looked around alertly and observed their surroundings—and the photographer—with curiosity. It was precisely that brief moment of mutual attention that made this encounter so special.

The young wildebeest in the middle of the herd create an extra sense of connection and protection. The adult animals instinctively form a protective circle around their young, whilst their powerful silhouettes contrast beautifully with the soft morning light and the warm earth tones of the track. The image exudes tranquillity, yet at the same time conveys the constant alertness that is part of life in the wild.

Patience was key for this photograph. From the safari vehicle, we waited quietly until the herd was relaxed enough to display natural behaviour. The composition came together almost of its own accord as the animals spread out across the road and one calf looked curiously straight into the camera.

This photograph brings the pure atmosphere of an African safari to life: unexpected encounters, silence, tension and the impressive dynamism of animals in their natural habitat. An evocative work of art for lovers of wildlife, nature and adventurous travel.
