About the artwork
The Asian wild dog (Cuon alpinus), also known as red dog, alpine dog, dhole or adjak, is a canine species from central and south-east Asia. The Asian wild dog somewhat resembles a large-looking fox. Its coat is solid brownish yellow or dark red, with dark tail and light belly. Its legs are comparatively short. Its length is about 90 centimetres, with a tail of 40 to 45 centimetres. Its weight is around 15 to 20 kilograms. The Asian wild dog hunts small animals and medium-sized ungulates, such as deer, in hordes during the day and also eats fruits. When hunting, the animal emits a characteristic grunting sound. Groups are territorial and usually contain 5 to 12 individuals. This species occurs wild only in Asia in mountainous forest areas, especially in the east and south. Specimens from cold regions have considerably thicker fur. Although this species is still found in a relatively large area, their numbers and distribution are decreasing. Some subspecies are highly endangered and possibly already extirpated.
