A truly beautiful painting of Amsterdam canal houses on the Damrak.
A gem for your living room but also great for decorating your office!
These stately Amsterdam canal houses have been photographed many times. A challenge to paint these buildings with their many windows and authentic ornaments.
Several photos served as the basis for this painting. Over the years, there have been renovations that always gave the buildings a different look. For this painting, both old and new facades were chosen.
That makes it special to look at, it does not get boring easily.
By the way, this is actually the back of the row of buildings. They are warehouses where goods used to be brought in through the water at the back. At the middle building, you can still see that there were also big doors on the floors. The goods were hoisted up and lifted inside. That must have been hard work.
The facades were built with different bricks in different colours. The windows are all little paintings in themselves. In some you see curtains and can almost see inside. In others, the sky or buildings across the street reflect.
The water of the canal ripples quietly, reflecting the canal houses.
The original acrylic painting measures 60x80cm and was painted spring 2021.
My grandfather was an amateur painter and, with an eye for detail, copied paintings by famous Dutch painters. Every time I smell oil paint, I imagine myself in his small studio where he spent hours.
Never thought I would adopt his love for art. But now I understand..
