Location: Oudekerksplein, Amsterdam Date: February 1941 In this photograph taken during the first year of the war, we see the Oude Kerk, taken from across the Oudezijds Voorburgwal.
In front of the cottages, an old lady shuffles across the snow. There is a so-called Peperbus, which stored electrical connections and was plastered with posters. In the frozen canal, a deck barge, No 12, belonging to the Penning firm, deck clothes, is on the left. Deck barges were towed by steam tugs. My grandfather owned a fleet of tugs - the Fa. De Zwart - which were docked behind Central Station.
The Germans initially bought tugs from him, but in later war years they were simply confiscated.
