The American Kestrel is the "little cousin" of the Eurasian Kestrel. It too can perform the famous stationary flight (the "pray") to find prey.
This is a very small bird of prey, with a length of about 30 centimetres and a weight of 80 to 160 grams.
Like our Kestrel, it likes open spaces, grasslands and savannahs; you will find it regularly on Texel. It also lives near farms and even around cities, although it is less adapted to city life.
The American Kestrel nests in cavities: holes in trees, gaps and crevices in rocks A small bird of prey, it does not hesitate to chase away the birds and small mammals that already live there.
Its menu is varied, exclusively meat, but necessarily small animals: it likes everything, including insects.
