The old city of groningen is surrounded by a belt of canals, which in earlier times protected the city and formed part of the fortress. the canals were in open connection with the Wadden Sea.
The Amelander Bocht is where the Reitdiep enters the city center and is still the sailing route for yachts to get to the lauwersmeer. Also in the extension is the white building which was the former Groninger shipping office. Nowadays there are apartments overlooking the only free port in the Netherlands, the Noorderhaven. Here were most of the grain warehouses.
