The alpaca (Vicugna pacos) - also called mountain lama - is a cloven-hoofed mammal from South America belonging to the camelidae family. The alpaca lives on the high plains of Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay and especially Peru, especially the plateau of Lake Titicaca in the districts of Puno, Cusco and Arequipa. The alpaca thrives best at an altitude of 4400-5300 metres where there is little humidity. On the other hand, it prefers soft, moist ground for its sensitive feet, with tender grass and plenty of pools to wallow in.
