Alice
William Merritt Chase
1892
The Art Institute of Chicago
Alice, the artist daughter of William Merrit Chase, poses here in an adorable white dress with pink ribbon. The white dress stands out sharply from the immensely dark background. Due in part to this light-dark contrast and to the central position the girl occupies in this painting, all attention is drawn to her. The foot forward, in combination with the holding of the ribbons, so that they stick out diagonally to the front, supported by a slightly backward leaning pose, make this painting still feel dynamic and yet very much at peace.
A lovely portrait in dark colors. A classic.
