About "African woman with Bird of Paradise flower and giraffe. Mixed Media"

by Karen Nijst

About the artwork

After our trip through Senegal, I created several works inspired by the beautiful stately African women, their colorful clothing and of course the beautiful nature.
In this fantasy drawing you can see a woman wearing a turban, beautiful jewelry, a giraffe and a Bird of Paradise flower.
The African Crane flower -see image- is among the world's most striking and colorful flowers. The plant can grow up to 4 meters high and is often called Bird of Paradise or Bird's Head Flower. Not surprising because the colors resemble those of a Bird of Paradise and the shape reminds you of the head of a bird with a large beak.

Flowers often have symbolic meanings. For example, the Bird of Paradise flower is said to stand for freedom and immortality, among other things. In the Christian faith, the flower is said to symbolize flames, symbolizing the descending of the Holy Spirit on the apostles.
Because of its adhesive roots, the plant also represents loyalty and tenacity. Do you send this flower to your loved one? Then you are effectively saying, "I remain faithful to you."
