White-capped bee-eaters' main prey is bees. If there are not enough bees, they also eat other (mostly flying) insects, such as dragonflies, grasshoppers, wasps, bumblebees and beetles, which they catch in flight. They know two ways to catch insects: they strike at lightning speed from their perches, or they hover over a swarm silently and then strike. The bee-eater removes sting and venom by rubbing the bee's abdomen firmly along a branch several times.
