Barbary lions are now considered extinct in the wild. It used to be common in the northern part of Africa and also in Asia. For a long time, the Barbary lion was considered a subspecies of the West African lion. In the meantime it is known that it is an independent species. Barbary lions, although not purebred, are bred in zoos today, or live there in captivity.
