It is interesting to notice the difference in steam coming out of the chimney and coming from under the wheels just above the track.
The steam from the chimney clearly contains waste products from combustion and is therefore also darker.
Coal is usually used as fuel, but sometimes fuel oil, wood or lignite is also used. Usually, the stoker has to shovel the fuel onto the fire, but in larger coal-fired steam locomotives, the supply of fuel is automatic, by means of an Archimedes screw driven by its own small steam engine.
Nowadays inconceivable that these steam trains would run with the necessary amount of CO2 emissions but still beautiful to put down on canvas. So herewith...
