A winter’s evening in Bruges: the Church of Our Lady

by Bruges Artworks

This artwork depicts the Church of Our Lady in Bruges on a quiet winter’s evening. The imposing medieval tower rises above the historic buildings and bare trees, whilst the last warm light slowly fades behind the clouds. Soft shades of blue, lilac, pink and muted gold lend the winter sky a tranquil and almost poetic atmosphere.

In the foreground, the Bruges canal draws the eye towards the tower. The subtle reflections, the moored boats and the finely rendered ripples introduce movement into the otherwise still cityscape. The arched branches of the bare weeping willow provide a natural counterbalance to the powerful vertical line of the church tower. It is precisely this contrast between monumental architecture and fragile winter nature that I wanted to emphasise in the work.

I live and work as an artist and city guide in Bruges and based this composition on my own photograph of the city. The artwork was then created using digital media and artistic drawing techniques. By combining transparent layers of colour, fine lines and soft textures, I created a recognisable yet personal interpretation of this special place.

The artwork brings the serene atmosphere of Bruges in winter and the subtle light of a northern sunset into an interior.
