A white tulip amongst the red ones

by Xander Broekhuizen

Amidst the vast fields full of red-orange tulips, there is one flower that immediately catches the eye. A white tulip, surrounded by dozens of colourful counterparts, forms the serene focal point of this photograph. It is precisely the contrast between the pale flower and the warm colours surrounding it that makes this image so special.

In a bulb field in the province of Groningen, the various colours and shapes come together beautifully. By positioning the camera at flower height and using a shallow depth of field, a playful interplay between sharpness and blur is created. The white tulip is razor-sharp in the frame, whilst the flowers in the background gradually fade into a colourful whole.

The dark leaves and stems add extra depth and give the photograph a somewhat more subdued feel. At the same time, the red and orange hues bring warmth and vibrancy to the image.

Sometimes a photograph doesn’t need to show the entire landscape to capture its beauty. It is precisely by zooming in on a single small detail that a unique image of spring in Groningen emerges. A striking contrast between colour, form and nature.
