A thick-headed fly enjoys some nectar in an umbellate flower whilst keeping watch

by Arjan Warmerdam

On a warm summer’s day in the woods, my eye was caught by this little skipper butterfly, which had chosen a white bellflower as its vantage point. Whilst other butterflies fluttered restlessly from flower to flower, this one remained calmly perched, as if taking in its surroundings with great attention. Its long antennae and alert posture give it a watchful air, as if it were standing guard over the greenery.

What immediately struck me was the contrast between the warm golden-orange hues of the butterfly and the crisp white flowers on which it rests. The flower forms a natural stage, whilst the soft green background draws all attention to the main subject. The gentle blur creates an almost painterly atmosphere in which the butterfly is shown to its best advantage.

For this shot, I deliberately sat low to the ground. From that perspective, the tiny insect suddenly seems large and significant. The sloping line of the stem guides the eye towards the flower and ultimately to the small head, which looks out over the landscape like a little sentinel. It was precisely that sense of tranquillity, focus and balance that I wanted to capture.

The photograph shows that beauty does not always have to be grand or rare. Sometimes it lies in a fleeting moment along a woodland path, in a butterfly that pauses for a moment whilst the sunlight illuminates its wings. It is these brief encounters with nature that inspire me time and again to set out with my camera.

With its fresh colours, soft background and tranquil composition, this piece fits perfectly into an interior where nature, light and simplicity take centre stage. Up close, you discover more and more details in the flower and the butterfly, whilst from a distance the image radiates tranquillity and space.
