A summer of orange in a glass

by Bianca ter Riet

This still life depicts a sparkling, summery scene centred around a glass of orange drink. The bright orange drink catches the light and seems to glow against the soft, warm backdrop of brown, beige and subtle orange accents. The bubbling texture of the glass and the liquid has been carefully rendered, making the effervescent liveliness of the aperitif almost tangible.

In front of the glass lie two whole oranges, a half and a segment, which provide a fresh contrast to the deep orange in the glass. Their glossy skins catch the light and display natural shades ranging from yellow to deep orange, whilst the segments reveal the juicy, almost fragrant interior. Small green leaves among the fruit add a lively accent and bring an organic rhythm to the composition, giving the still life a fresh, summery energy.

The wooden tabletop on which the glass and fruit rest has a warm tone and adds texture and depth to the scene. The light plays softly across the wood and the rounded shapes of the oranges and the glass, creating a sense of intimacy and closeness. The background, composed of a mix of brown, beige and orange washes, is loosely painted with visible brushstrokes that enhance the warmth and cosiness of the scene.

The whole exudes a summery atmosphere of freshness, pleasure and relaxation. The combination of the vibrant orange of the drink, the lively citrus fruit and the soft, warm tones of the table and background makes the still life harmonious and inviting. It invites the viewer to pause and reflect on the moment, to appreciate the light elegance of the composition and to almost literally savour the summery energy. Still Life.
