The sturdy red lighthouse on the northernmost tip of the island is for many people the symbol of Texel.
LIGHTHOUSE VISITS
The lighthouse is open to the public. After a staircase of 118 steps, at 45 meters above sea level, a magnificent view over the North Sea, the Wadden Sea, the northern part of the island and nearby Vlieland awaits you. In the dark, the light of the Texel lighthouse can be seen all the way to Leeuwarden.
History of the lighthouse
Texel got a lighthouse in 1864, after years of action by the Texel notary Kikkert. Indeed, the surrounding waters were so dangerous for shipping that, before the lighthouse was erected, ships sank year after year. In a short exhibition in the lighthouse this will be discussed.
During the Second World War, an important part of the Georgian Revolt or Russian War took place around the lighthouse. The bullet holes are still visible in the wall of the tower.
