A panoramic view of the Alps above Germany’s southernmost town

by Walter G. Allgöwer

High above the Upper Iller Valley, the view from the Mittagberg unfolds like a panorama that looks as though nature itself has spread out a vast, luminous map of the Allgäu. Far below lies Sonthofen, Germany’s southernmost town, nestled amongst green meadows, dark forests and the mighty peaks of the Allgäu Alps. From this height, the houses merge into fine lines and splashes of colour, whilst roads wind their way through the landscape like silver threads.
The light of a clear day gently bathes the valleys and hills. The meadows glow in countless shades of green, as if they were absorbing the sunlight and reflecting it back to the sky. Above them rises a ring of mountains, rugged and majestic, shaped by time, wind and weather. Their blue silhouettes blur into the distance, lending the horizon an almost dreamlike depth.
From up here, the world seems quieter. The hustle and bustle of life in the valley becomes a faint sense, whilst the view sweeps far beyond villages, forests and peaks. The Mittagberg becomes a prime vantage point overlooking a landscape that has moved and inspired people for centuries. In this moment, vastness and tranquillity merge into a feeling of profound freedom, and the Allgäu reveals itself at its most beautiful: vast, bathed in light and full of timeless harmony.
