The Geese of Swifterbant
During my walk in the serene swamp area of Swifterbant, I met three chicks, bobbing in a small ditch. Their presence felt almost surreal, a fragile echo of the bigger picture: the impressive flock of geese that call the nature reserve home. The chicks swam in an almost rhythmic sequence, like a living painting on the mirror-smooth water.
The ditch was quiet, untouched by the bustle of the world. But my unexpected appearance caused a disturbance. The ripples in the water, produced by my presence, were like a reminder that even the smallest action has an impact. It became clear to me that I, a stranger in their world, was a disruptor.
In that moment of realisation, I chose to retreat, to restore the peace I had disturbed. As I walked away, I allowed silence, harmony and beauty to regain their place. Sometimes, I realised, our presence is more than enough. It is a lesson in humility, an invitation to observe without disturbing, to choose moments carefully and let nature keep its own rhythm.
The geese of Swifterbant taught me more than I expected. They reminded me that real beauty lies in respecting the fragile balance of life around us.
