A lantern on a misty stone wall

by Henk Egbertzen

A stone wall, sloping upwards to the right. Behind that wall, a flight of steps leads upwards — you can’t see it, but the sloping line gives it away. On top of the wall, an old lantern, glowing in the mist.

-
The wall is old. Exposed stones, with moss growing between them, a crack here and there. Not a smooth façade, but a wall that has stood for centuries. The sloping line is not a decoration; it is the shape of the staircase behind it.

- The lantern is the only source of light. Warm, orange, almost liquid. It does not shine; it glows. As if a candle were burning inside it instead of a bulb. As if the light itself were old.

- The mist is everywhere. Not like smoke, not like a cloud, but like a haze that softens the edges of the wall. As if the world outside the lantern doesn’t exist for a moment. As if the staircase leads nowhere, or rather, somewhere you cannot reach.

- The style is painterly. The texture of the stones is visible, the moss is soft, the mist has texture. As if it were not a photograph, but a painting from another time. - This piece looks good in a hallway, office or reading nook. For those who love tranquil atmospheres. For those who want something that transports you to a place you do not know.
