A fleeting miracle in Tasmania by Jiri Viehmann

This photograph was taken on 24 December 2019 in South Tasmania on the Moonlight Ridge Track, often simply referred to as the Moonlight Track. This challenging route lies within the Southwest National Park and winds through one of Tasmania’s wildest and most remote landscapes. For many walkers, it serves as a spectacular gateway to the mountain peaks of the Southern Ranges, yet on this particular evening, the track revealed a particularly tranquil and almost mysterious side.

During the blue hour, between dusk and nightfall, the vast mountain landscape was already bathed in cool, clear colours. Then something unexpected happened. As if out of nowhere, a ribbon of mist suddenly settled over the mountain ridge. For just about five minutes, the mist flowed over the summit, as if the mountain itself were breathing. Then it vanished again just as quickly as it had come.

The rocky formations in the foreground, the barren wilderness and the distant mountain ranges form a powerful backdrop for this fleeting moment in nature. It is precisely this blend of rugged landscape, solitude and a fleeting atmosphere that makes the image so special. It speaks of Tasmania’s wild beauty and of a moment that cannot be repeated.
