About ‘A face tells stories – Philippines, 1991’ by Robert Jan Smit

Some faces tell a story without a single word being spoken. This poignant black-and-white portrait, taken during a trip through the Philippines in 1991, is a wonderful example of this.
The man looks up slightly, with an open expression and a faint smile. His face bears the visible marks of time. Fine and deep wrinkles mark his skin, whilst his eyes radiate something friendly and lively. The weathered headgear and simple clothing lend the portrait an authentic character. It is not a posed studio shot, but a moment of encounter, captured whilst travelling through a world that, for me as a photographer, was full of new impressions.
The black-and-white rendering enhances the power of the image. Without the distraction of colour, the texture of the skin, the silver-grey hair and the subtle play of light on the face are brought out even more effectively. The dark areas contrast with the lighter background and naturally draw the eye to the subject’s eyes and smile.
I took this photograph in 1991, near the famous rice terraces of Banaue in the Philippines. It is a reminder of a time when travelling meant, above all, observing, meeting people and capturing moments that cannot be recreated. The photograph was originally taken on film and later digitised, whilst retaining the character of the original shot.
This portrait is more than just a travel photograph. It is a tribute to human expression and to the beauty of a face in which life has become visible. Its timeless quality makes the image ideal for an interior where photography with character, culture and a story deserves a place.
A special piece for lovers of black-and-white photography, authentic portraits and images that continue to captivate even after many years.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
