In the village of Nirona, near Bhuj in Gujarat, craftsmen perpetuate age-old techniques handed down from generation to generation. In this image, a craftsman is working wood with a traditional hand lathe, using a bow and rod to turn the piece of wood. This process, which requires great dexterity and precision, is used to create decorative objects, toys and everyday tools.
Nirona's craftsmanship is renowned for a number of art forms, including the Rogan Art technique, as well as wood and metal work. Each piece bears witness to a rich cultural heritage and the talent of local craftsmen. In a world dominated by industry, these traditional crafts are a precious heritage that must be preserved and promoted.
To visit these villages is to plunge into a world where time seems suspended, between creativity and tradition.
