The abandoned salpet mine Humberstone, on the edge of the Atacama Desert near Iquique is Unesco World Heritage Site. Built in the late 19th century, the mine was a village in itself, with all amenities including a school, a theatre, shops and even a swimming pool. Management and staff lived and worked on site. Thanks to climatic conditions, much has been preserved as it was once left when it closed in 1960.
