IJmuiden is a port town in the municipality of Velsen, in the Dutch province of North Holland. The North Sea Canal is connected to the North Sea there via the locks. In the harbour mouth is the Fort Island, part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. With over 32,000 inhabitants, it is by far the largest town within the municipality of Velsen.
IJmuiden has four harbours: the Vissershaven (ships' letter code IJM) with a fish auction, the Haringhaven, the IJmondhaven and Seaport Marina IJmuiden (a harbour for recreational boating). Measured by transhipment, IJmuiden is one of the largest seaports in the Netherlands. Only the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam are larger. IJmuiden is also the largest fishing port in the Netherlands. A ferry to Newcastle also operates from IJmuiden's fishing port.
