A bleaching field, Jacob Maris.
At a French village church, women are doing their laundry. One woman puts the linen on the bleachfield, another gets water at the pump. Maris divided the space into three by placing a fence between the women and an autumnal brown hedge in front of the church. The fine branches of the young trees against the sky reinforce these horizontal lines in the composition.
