A Resting Place in the Infinite White – A Seal in Antarctica

by Nanda Bussers

A solitary seal rests on a vast snow-covered plain, surrounded by the monumental forms of the Antarctic landscape. In the background, pale blue ice floes and snow-covered slopes rise up, blending almost seamlessly into the sky in the diffuse light. The composition emphasises the continent’s vast scale; the animal forms a small, dark contrast in a world otherwise consisting entirely of shades of white and blue. A tranquil moment of wildlife in its purest and most remote form, where time seems to slow against a backdrop of ancient ice.

Antarctica: A world of silence and light
In 2024, I travelled to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica. A world you can only truly understand when you’re there yourself.
What moved me most there was the silence. In that endless expanse of ice, wind and light, everything naturally falls silent. As if everything slows down: time, your thoughts, even your breathing. With my camera, I have tried not only to show what it looks like, but above all how it feels to be there.
From this journey, I have selected 32 images that, for me, capture the essence of that experience. Images of stillness, space and the fragile power of nature.
I invite you to pause for a moment and let yourself be carried away into that world of silence and light.
