About the artwork

A McDonnell Douglas MD-11 of Martinair Cargo (PH-MCU) has landed on the Polderbaan.

The MD-11 is a widebody aircraft for the medium to long haul and could carry from 250 to 410 passengers in different classes. The aircraft has an engine under each wing and a third engine on the underside of the vertical stabilizer. The MD-11 was derived from the DC-10, but had a longer fuselage, a larger wing area, winglets, new engines and was aerodynamically optimized. Because of the winglets, the aircraft is said to save up to 2.5% fuel. It is notable that the tail surfaces (horizontal stabilizers) are a lot smaller than those of the DC-10.

As of 1995, Martinair had seven MD-11s in service. A number was used in the summer months for passenger flights to distant vacation destinations. Martinair used a two-class configuration for this purpose: 24 seats star class and 344 economy class (total of 368 passengers). After the summer months of 2008, all MD-11s at Martinair were only used for cargo flights.

I took this photo on July 20, 2014.
