About ‘A Colourful Appearance in M'bour’ by Dirk Lahuis

Amid the unpolished bustle of M'bour, where life normally manifests itself in an organised chaos of trade and traffic, a moment of visual hierarchy suddenly emerges. In this photograph, the sea of people and obstacles seems to literally give way to an unmistakable African beauty. She moves through the city centre with a natural, almost regal elegance, reducing the noisy surroundings to a stilted backdrop for a moment.

The contrast in the image is fascinating. The background is marked by the raw reality of the city: the windblown sand that lays a filter of dust over the street, the simple shops with their weathered facades and the vendors waiting patiently, almost resignedly, in the shadows for patronage. Against this canvas of matte earth tones and grey, she stands out flamingly. Her traditional dress is a vibrant celebration of colour and pattern, bright and flawless, as if the dust of the street has no hold on her.

But it is her posture that gives the picture its narrative power. She looks back over her shoulder, deep into the street. Her gaze is inscrutable and raises questions. Is she looking at someone who called out to her? Is she checking to see if she is being followed? Or is she casting a token glance at what lies behind her, as she herself moves determinedly forward? It is a pose full of grace and mystery that forces the viewer to look not only at the aesthetics, but also at the story of the woman on the crowded streets of Senegal.

My passion for photography started early, around 1970. In the era of analogue photography, I bought a second-hand Agfa Iso Rapid Ic from my savings. Later, I could afford a new camera, and it became a Pentax K1000. I dreamed of a Contax, a Canon AE-1 or a Hasselblad, but those were out of my reach. At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
