About "124. Utrecht Conservatory of Music"

About the artwork

The digital artwork shows a bright and minimalist scene bathed in a brilliant blue sky with no clouds. At its centre is the "Conservatorium van Utrecht", a striking yellow plastered three-storey building. The facade is characterised by a rhythmic repetition of rectangular windows, placed exactly one above the other on each floor, evoking a sense of order and structure. The perspective is unusual and slightly alienating: the corner of the building rises like a pointed highest point, making the architecture appear monumental and almost abstract. This perspective reinforces the impression of the building as an isolated object against the bright blue sky. To the right of the picture, a few bare branches of a tree protrude into the frame, like fragile lines that break the austere, geometric whole and provide a subtle contrast to the hard lines of the architecture. On the pavement, right in front of the building, stands a lone, abandoned cello with a bow. This instrument, unattended and vulnerable in the void, raises questions about absence, silence and music that no longer sounds. "Ceci est un conservatoire", a playful nod to Magritte's famous statement and an ironic reflection on the relationship between image and meaning. Balancing between realism and symbolism, the artwork invites the viewer to reflect on art, music, and the way we perceive cultural institutions. What is real, and what is just an image
