About the artwork

"The digital artwork "Viaduct under the Waterlinieweg" shows a stylised viaduct exuding a raw, urban atmosphere. The viaduct is completely covered in colourful graffiti, in which one of the many tags stands out: MANKS, prominently displayed in large, white block letters that contrast with the chaotic layers next to it. This name acts as a visual anchor in the image. However, the artist does not seem to make any attempt to appreciate graffiti as an art form; on the contrary, the rendering emphasises the messiness and erosion of the subway.
In the background, stylised bushes are visible, rendered in simple, shapes that are a subtle reference to nature, but without realistic details. They seem present more as a decorative element, meant to soften the hard lines of the overpass rather than to represent real vegetation. Above it, a summer-blue, cloudless sky stretches out, contrasting sharply with the dark, shaded space below the viaduct. This sky gives the artwork an unexpected openness, almost a sense of escape from the bleak underworld of the viaduct.
The viaduct lies on its familiar walking route to the centre of Utrecht, giving the work a recognisable and local dimension. Yet the stylised representation emphasises the alienation and tension between the urban environment and the natural elements. Balancing between observation and criticism, this artwork makes the viewer reflect on the aesthetics of everyday places.
