The digital artwork Viaduct Nieuwe Houtenseweg captures an everyday but layered moment on the outskirts of Utrecht. At its centre is the concrete viaduct carrying the Nieuwe Houtenseweg over the A27 motorway. The viaduct looks robust, functional and minimalist, but gains character through the details around it. On either side of the bridge are two traffic lights, glowing bright red and symbolising standstill. Their light reflects subtly on the grey road surface and the structure of the viaduct.
To the right, a striking white-purple graffiti attracts attention. Its playful lines and contrasting colours break the sleek, industrial atmosphere of concrete and asphalt. Behind the bridge, the slender poles of the railway overhead wires rise up, as silent witnesses of movement and connection. They form a rhythmic pattern against the clear sky.
In the distance, the office buildings of Lunetten are visible, their rectangular silhouettes standing out against the horizon. This urban background emphasises the border area between infrastructure and urbanity. Above all this, an almost perfect blue sky shines, interrupted only by a single white cloud that playfully hovers above the scene, a moment of lightness in an otherwise structured image.
The artwork captures an unexpected beauty in a functional environment, where colour, light and line come together in a moment of stillness and transit.
