About the artwork

The digital artwork shows a meticulous reproduction of the stained-glass window taken from the former Algemeen Handelsblad building in Amsterdam, and is now on display at Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden. The window consists of 20 stylised figures, each rendered in a geometric-abstract style reminiscent of early 20th-century art deco and modernist influences. The figures are arranged to form a harmonious whole, in which movement, labour and cooperation are central.
Each figure represents an archetype from modern society at the time: from workers and writers to scientists and merchants. The stained-glass technique enhances expressiveness through the use of contrasting colours and clean lines that define the contours of the figures. Despite their abstraction, the poses and attributes remain recognisable, making the work accessible and symbolically rich.
The window not only tells a visual story, but also acts as an ode to the power of the collective. The 20 figures refer to the multiformity of society, and at the same time to the connection between different social roles. The digital artwork manages to present this heritage in an innovative way, bringing light and colour to life digitally, without losing the historical stratification.
This digital reconstruction offers a new dimension to the original window and makes the heritage accessible to a wider audience, both inside and outside the museum.
