My name is Ubo Pakes and I live and work in Cebu in the Philippines for over 10 years. This is a vibrant metropolis with a lot of activity. The city has an old Spanish background and is in all aspects the second largest city in the country after Manila. Because I live and work here with my Filipino family, I know the city like the back of my hand. That is why I come to places where you, as a tourist, don't easily go. I speak the language and with my camera I bring that city to life; the markets, alleys, and even the cemetery, early in the morning, during rush hour and late in the evening. I am especially interested in the life and environment of the people in the big city. The dynamics of the metropolis fascinate me. Everyone is busy, everyone is on the road and many people live and work on the streets. I want to show the survivors: the workers, the people on the market, the people who work, the children. The city then is both a background for my photos, but also plays a leading role. I am looking for the human moment in the city jungle.
