The Frisian peat polders - Brandemeer and Rottige Meente - were less than a century ago the scene of degrading conditions, now they are rich nature reserves. An exuberant plant and animal life, with in Rottige Meente even otters that have come to swim in from the nearby Weerribben. Three Frisian natural pearls, courtesy of the peat laborers.
The men toiled from dark to dark in the wet low moor to extract as many peats as possible from the soil. The peat laborers did not enjoy themselves. Extracting peat was more than hard work. The landscape they left behind is indeed to be enjoyed. The exuberant nature of the peat polders is a mosaic of water and land, reeds and quaking fens, flowering grasslands and wetlands.
