For over a century, a drowning house has stood in the middle of the Vliehors. This used to be a safe place for drowning people> There were dry clothes, water and food. There was also a telephone connection to the Posthuys. Vlieland is one of the Wadden Islands. Only 1,200 people live there and there is only one village. There is also nature; forest, salt marsh, dunes, beach and, of course, the Vliehors. The Vliehors is the largest sand flat in Europe and is mainly used as a military training ground. No training takes place at weekends, when most of the area is freely accessible.
